HAINBACH & ENSEMBLE RECHERCHE
Retold is a story about coming home, saying goodbye and ultimately looking forward. On this collaboration record, Hainbach pairs up with the award-winning, modern classical Ensemble Recherche to reinterpret and reshape existing pieces – and find new ones in the process.
Ensemble Recherche is based in Freiburg, the city Hainbach was born in and grew up nearby. When he was invited to play a show there with the collective, he went through all the music he created in his old home, cut fragments of it into tape loops and then together with the ensemble improvised to those loops to create something unique out of the familiar. The result is Retold, an album that thrives from the masterful musicianship of its makers. Living somewhere between ambient and experimental music, it blends emotive synths parts with virtuoso performances on classical instruments. Each track tells a story, often ending up in vastly different places than they started at.
While Hainbach originally created the core elements of each of the album’s pieces, they no longer belong just to him. Through the work on Retold, they became a collective experience – shared memories.
The members of Ensemble Recherche have been dedicated to the new and unknown since 1985. The Freiburg-based ensemble has shaped contemporary music and musical history in this period of four decades – with more than 1.000 premieres and 60 CD recordings. The nine musicians, all internationally-known soloists in the field of contemporary music, are enthusiasts for experimentation and passionately confront musical issues of the present. Bringing their musicality and their individual personalities to the collective, the nine soloists search for answers together, as an ensemble. The considerable energy and personal commitment of each and every member explains why the independent ensemble has been recognised as one of the most important players in the field of contemporary music for four decades.
Ensemble Recherche is regularly invited to the most prestigious festivals in Europe, and has made guest appearances at, among others, the Salzburg Festival, the Lucerne Festival, the Elbe Philharmonic Hall, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Venice Biennale, the Donaueschingen Music Festival, the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, and the Vienna Modern. International concert tours have taken the ensemble to, among other places, Israel, Japan, China, Russia, Mexico, the USA and South America.
In collaboration with both young and established composers, Ensemble Recherche generates new impetus and greatly influences the development of contemporary music.
Based out of Berlin, Germany, electro-acoustic composer Hainbach (Stefan Paul Goetsch) creates experimental music that is both visceral and whimsical. Using esoteric synthesizers, test equipment and magnetic tape he creates “one hell of a trip” in his live sets and recorded music. He shares techniques on experimental music on his YouTube channel, which has attracted an ever growing audience of more than 200000 subscribers and almost 20 Million views, with several videos going viral. His body of work includes film soundtracks, pop productions, chamber music, theater music, sound art installations and music software.
