DASHA RUSH

Territories: Worldwide

“Dasha’s horizons have risen with her ambitions, and with the backing of influential historical operators like Raster-Noton, she has found room to spread her wings at a time when it matters most both to her artistic career and to her influence in general” – THE QUIETUS

“If one thing overarches the Berlin-based producer, experimental sound artist and Dj’s practice is her limitless quest for metaphysical answers: from astrophysics to extreme natural phenomena, the depths of the human psyche or reflecting on what is the purpose of art itself” – CLOT MAG

“a beautiful, generous collection of tracks that toyed with that state between dozing and waking, contrasting gentle ballads with noisier, more dramatic pieces” – RESIDENT ADVISOR

Dasha Rush is a live performer, electronic music composer, sound artist, and techno DJ whose work extends beyond the dance floor and sometimes beyond music itself. In her strange and twisted world, machines become the protagonists of a neo-romanticism woven together with human dreams.

Dasha Rush is a Russian-born French national based in Berlin. She is an artist who spends much of her time traveling around the globe while working on a wide variety of electronic music and art projects. She has released music on labels such as Sonic Groove and Raster-Noton, and has also collaborated extensively with other artists. In addition, part of her work has been released on her own labels, Fullpanda Records (2005) and the experimental sub-label Hunger to Create (2004).

She began her musical career at a young age in Moscow, where she was one of the first female DJs and producers in Eastern Europe. After moving to France in 1996, she gained international recognition in the early 2000s and developed as an electronic music composer, producer, and DJ, experimenting with various artistic forms through collaborations with dancers and painters.

Rush views genres as starting points rather than destinations, and explores rare forms of electronic experimentation that draw from the roots of underground music of the early 20th century. Her 2015 album on Raster-Noton can be seen as a metaphor for her musical approach. “These 16 pieces are transmissions from that state between sleep and wakefulness,” wrote Tony Naylor, reflecting the in-between zones her music often inhabits. Dubby yet intense, brutal yet tender, foggy yet clear, Sleepstep is a mass of contradictions. Not being one thing or the other is vitally important to Rush, and this stance goes hand in hand with her strong independent streak.

She continually pushes the boundaries of contemporary music and encourages experimentation across musical and non-musical forms, creating thoughtful compositions within multidisciplinary projects. Her audiovisual work, often inspired by scientific subjects, includes projects such as Antarctic Takt (2014), Dark Hearts of Space (2015), and Aurora Cerebralis (2019). In her multidisciplinary show Les Territoires Éphémères (2018), she combines Japanese butoh, theatre, poetry, and digital music and visuals.
